SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

Person who mainly assists medical specialists in the preparation and execution of their specialized work related in particular to research and information, with the exception of the design of professional work.

Within a predetermined research plan, he / she applies scientific methods and techniques to collect data, collate it, perform the required arithmetic or statistical operations and reproduce this data in a specific form.

It can, by using specific communication techniques, transmit specialized information on various subjects.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

The research assistant will support a research project on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, otherwise known as diabetes during pregnancy.

The project name is Partnering with the Cree to Develop, Implement, and Evaluate a Sustainable Diabetes Prevention Strategy in Young Families with a Gestational Diabetes History.

Mothers with a history of gestational diabetes, their partners and their children have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes after she has given birth.

This community-based project would like to help these mothers and their families by offering free cooking and exercise education in order to teach them how to make changes to prevent themselves, and their families, from developing type 2 diabetes in the future.

The role of the research assistant will be to act as a bridge between the research team and community members participating in the study.

The project is a collaboration between the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB) with funding available until June 30, 2026.

Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Assist with and help coordinate participant recruitment;
  • Develop locally tailored recruitment approaches;
  • Answer any questions participants have related to the study;
  • Participate in research meetings;
  • Collaborate with the team to refine and define the intervention;
  • Keep track of the statistics of the recruitment process (number of people referred, contacted, participating, etc.);
  • Meet regularly with CBHSSJB local partners;
  • Record the contact information of those willing to participate in a secure and confidential manner;
  • Deliver the intervention which may include :

o Cooking healthy meals with the participants in their own home

o Exercising / walking with the participants at a time and place convenient for the participant

o Encouraging and facilitating the use of existing programs such as the community kitchen and exercise programs through AWASH, use of the local sports facility, and other community-based activities that facilitate healthy living

o Create a community of support through social media

REQUIREMENTS

Education :

High School Diploma.

Experience :

One (1) year of relevant experience.

Knowledge and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of medical terminology to prepare documents and reports is a strong asset;
  • Knowledge of the MSSS Network and administrative regulations is an asset;
  • Good knowledge of routine office work;
  • Good knowledge of Office Suite;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and independently with minimum supervision;
  • Be able to handle multiple files at the same time;
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and spoken);
  • Practical, attentive to detail and analytical;
  • Sense of accountability, resourcefulness & vigilance;
  • Teamwork skills;
  • Well organized.

Language :

  • Fluent in Cree and English;
  • Fluency in French is an asset.
